Building energy management systems to become vital as “zero energy” buildings become more important

Global revenue in the “zero energy” buildings market is predicted to reach an impressive $1.4 trillion in two decades, a recent report by Navigant Research suggests.

The report calculated global revenue could grow from $629.3 million a year in 2014 to almost double that value by 2035. A zero energy building, dubbed ZEB in the report, is defined as one which generates as much energy over the course of a year as it uses. For this purpose, it uses optimized building energy management systems and also green generation capabilities (such as roof-mounted solar panels).

The significant growth in revenue is put down to governments, corporations and building firms trying to slash energy costs and minimise the carbon footprint of their buildings.

Noah Goldstein, research director at the company said: “A number of large-scale and interesting showcase developments are paving the way for the widespread adoption of ZEBs in a few innovative regions around the world,” he added.

The study called ‘Zero Energy Buildings’ looked at six areas: lighting, walls and roof, glazing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, renewable energy and finally “soft” costs, i.e. anything that isn’t a solid building item such as fees for architects or engineers.

The best solution for reducing and thoroughly managing energy bills is the implementation of a solid and reliable Building Energy Management system.

Building Energy Management Systems are capable of delivering extensive monitoring and control options, compared to basic controls. They typically employ data from a variety of sources (boiler flow and return sensors, internal and external temperature sensors, occupancy sensors, humidity sensors, etc.), and enable the perfect optimization of a building’s boiler-based central heating system.
