E.ON asks for official ban on automatic energy contract rollovers for businesses

Energy supplier E.ON has pledged its support for a full “industry-wide end” to automatic energy contract rollovers, in order to help small and medium-sized businesses save more on their energy bills, a news report on the matter reveals.

E.ON claims that after carrying out a survey with SMEs, it discovered that 86% of them would prefer to negotiate a new contract or move to a more flexible agreement rather than automatically being ‘rolled’ on to a new long-term fixed deal.

The problem of automatic rollovers is a very serious one, so much so that even energy regulator Ofgem has decided to impose severe restrictions on this practice or ban it altogether starting from next year.

Anthony Ainsworth, Sales and Marketing Director of E.ON UK said: “We know from our own business customer panel and from independent research that the majority of small businesses just don’t like the automatic rollover process and find it too complex. The whole industry must do the same or it won’t work. For any one supplier to act alone risks layering greater complexity on to an already confusing situation.”

Naturally, such an initiative will certainly have a positive effect on energy pricing at SME levels, and should be encouraged. Nevertheless, the truth of the matter is that actually implementing measures that would restrict automatic contract rollovers might take some time (and might also prove to be a rather difficult process), and this is specifically where HeatingSave can lend a helping-hand, since our advanced Building Energy Management System can achieve energy savings of up to 30%.

The This is achieved by optimizing the energy consumption levels within any building with the help of an advanced heat-loss algorithm that creates a specific profile for any building and based on that, switches heating on later if its warm and off earlier if its cold.

Furthermore, the system also offers an advanced automatic occupancy detection system that allows the temperature to reduce to a background when areas are not used and quickly brought up to temperature when they are being used.
