Local Authority Energy Efficiency Index to score local councils based on energy efficiency

One of the UK’s best-known insulation systems’ manufacturers has launched a pilot scheme that will see local authorities across England being rated based on their energy efficiency improvements, a recent news report in the business media has been able to reveal.

The Local Authority Energy Efficiency Index scheme launched by Knauf Insulation produced scores according to each authority’s energy management of its own properties, how it works to improve energy efficiency in the community and its housing stock and how it develops energy infrastructure.

In total, 25 local authorities were tested, including Metropolitan, London and Unitary authorities.

Knauf created the index, supported by the UK Green Building Council, for officials, councillors and interested parties to measure their energy efficiency and compare to other areas.

Local authorities who scored highly were Southampton, Kingston-upon-Hull, Peterborough, Coventry and Leeds.

Scores were also determined by the measure of domestic energy use per capita in each Local Authority, taking into account the levels of insulation and air tightness of housing as well as the density and spatial layout of properties.

Energy monitoring systems providing consumption readings that are very clear and easy to understand are the best solution for customers complaining about the energy bills’ lack of clarity.

Efficient and effective Building Energy Management Systems are capable of delivering extensive monitoring and control options, compared to basic controls. They typically employ data from a variety of sources (boiler flow and return sensors, internal and external temperature sensors, occupancy sensors, humidity sensors, etc.), and enable the perfect optimization of a building’s boiler-based central heating system.
