  1. Schools in Bath invited to join energy efficiency and saving scheme

    Schools across Bath and North East Somerset have been invited to join a new energy efficiency programme created by two local community groups.

    Called Energy Sparks, the platform is currently recruiting primary schools with pupils who would be enthusiastic to take part in monitoring their school’s energy usage and help the school be energy efficient.

    Bath: Hacked, one of Bath’s Tech-focused community groups and Transition Bath, an active environmental group, joined forces in August 2016 to develop an interactive website and education programme to teach primary schools children about energy and at the same time help schools reduce their energy bills.

    “We want to help schools become more energy efficient. This will save them money and benefit the environment. The website we’ve built does this by giving schools better access to their energy usage data, presenting it using simple easy to understand visualisations that the whole school can access and use.” explained Leigh Dodds of Bath: Hacked.

  3. Smart energy monitoring rollout reaches 81% approval rating, research finds

    Almost 81% percent of UK citizens would recommend a smart meter or smart energy monitoring system to others, a recent survey by Smart Energy GB has been able to suggest.

    The company’s Smart energy outlook research report shows that a large majority of people with smart meters are using the technology on a regular basis to keep their energy costs under control. Eighty two per cent of people with smart meters are taking steps to reduce their energy use.

    The research also shows that those who have in-home displays (IHDs) installed are using them regularly to save energy. Eight out of ten people with an IHD check it regularly. Nearly nine in ten (88 per cent) of those with an IHD say that they have a better idea of what they’re spending on energy, compared to 76 per cent of those who have a smart meter but not an IHD.

  4. Homeowners waste hundreds of pounds on energy each year, research finds

    Most UK homeowners waste hundreds of pounds on their energy bills each year through a lack of basic knowledge about energy efficiency, according to new research from Anglian Home Improvements.

    The survey of 1,000 adults looked into how energy efficient people are and discovered that just 14 per cent of respondents knew that the optimal temperature for a home is 21 degrees, with a quarter (24 per cent) believing it to be higher than 21 degrees. This factor alone affects energy bills, since, according to the Energy Saving Trust, £65 is added to the average annual heating bill for each degree Celsius that the thermostat is turned up.

    Energy mistakes adults are guilty of include the following: 50 per cent leave TV on standby; 44 per cent leave plugs switched on; 35 per cent leave phone on charge overnight, 28 per cent leave the tap on whilst brushing teeth and 27 per cent leave their laptop on charge for more than one hour.

  6. Scotland’s private landlords should be coerced to improve energy efficiency as means of reducing fuel poverty

    Private landlords across Scotland should be legally coerced to improve their properties’ energy efficiency in a bid to help tackle fuel poverty, according to campaigners.

    Campaign group Energy Action Scotland (EAS) believes that new laws should be introduced to ensure the same energy efficiency standards apply in the private rented sector as they do in council and social housing, a news report has been able to reveal.

    The new regulations should also force landlords to install double glazing, insulation or draught-proofing, the same source suggests.

    Norman Kerr, director of EAS, has accused the Scottish Government of failing to do enough to help families who can’t afford to heat their homes, with ministers certain to miss their goal of ending fuel poverty by the end of November.

    John Blackwood, chief executive of the Scottish Association of Landlords, said: “Landlords already spend millions of pounds each year upgrading and improving housing stock, much of which includes measures which contribute to reducing fuel poverty.

    “However, due regard must be given to the different types of housing stock which private landlords are responsible for compared to social housing – this often makes some upgrades technically impossible or financially prohibitive.”

    Ministers have been accused of missing their goal to eradicate fuel poverty this year “by a country mile”, with an estimated 800,000 people still struggling to afford to heat their homes.

  8. More than 1,500 Southampton homes to become more energy efficient as part of £27m revamp

    Over 1,500 homes in Southampton are set to become more energy efficient under a scheme launched by Southampton City Council and British Gas, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

    The range of improvements will include new windows, tenant controlled heating, external wall insulation, new roofs and coloured rendering. The scheme is a part of the Energy Companies Obligation.

    Cllr Warwick Payne, Cabinet Member for Housing and Sustainability, said: “This energy efficiency project will provide affordable warmth to tenants, improve the appearance of properties and boost the local economy with job opportunities created by this exciting scheme.

    “This will be a massive project, some three times larger than the recent works in Weston. We look forward to working with British Gas, our tenants and the wider communities in the months ahead to make energy-saving improvements to these estates.”

  9. Ofgem reveals ambitious plans to reduce fuel poverty

    British energy regulator Ofgem has revealed ambitious plans to reduce fuel poverty across the UK by connecting more homes to the gas grid, a recent news report has been able to reveal.

    Under this new scheme, Network companies will have to deliver more than 90,000 – or 18% more – fuel poor connections by 2021. The change, including a number of other revisions to the Fuel Poor Network Extension Scheme, will come into effect from April 2016.

    The scheme is delivered through Ofgem’s RIIO-GD1 price control and helps fuel poor and vulnerable households switch to natural gas by helping towards the cost of connecting to the gas network.

    The decision follows the regulator’s 13-month review of the initiative, which included a request for network companies to resubmit their business plans for the fuel poor and identify ways of increasing the number of connections.

    They found more than 13,700 eligible households on top of the 77,450 connections identified in their original business plans.

    Ofgem said it would allow the companies an extra £17.6 million spending to deliver the additional connections.

    Since buildings are responsible for around 40% of Europe’s energy consumption, the EU has launched a new research project, called DIRECTION, that aims to turn energy-efficient new building projects into successful businesses, a recent news report has revealed.

    Knowledge that energy efficiency saves money is widespread, but energy issues remain a low priority for consumers and firms, participants in the project have argued.

    Typically it is client demand that shifts markets: “What we really need is a drive for energy efficiency from those who buy or rent, which will force the market to implement it,” remarks Oliver Vietgen, an architect representing Facit GmbH & Co. KG, which is one of the partners of the EU project DIRECTION.

    A client with no expertise who wants an energy-efficient building might have a hard time finding out what the best solutions are, where to get financing or what business model to look at. “There is certainly a big gap in bringing the knowledge to what owners actually need,” affirms John Morrissey, expert in sustainability in the built environment at Liverpool John Moores University, in England.
