Environment Agency to investigate firms over ESOS status

Over 1,200 companies around the UK are currently being investigated by the Environment Agency over their Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) status, with many of them being suspected of having illegally avoided participation in the scheme, a news report has been able to suggest.

The ESOS scheme prompts qualifying UK businesses to undertake comprehensive assessments of energy use and energy efficiency opportunities at least once every four years. However, a company can be exempt from this scheme if it isn’t large enough to trigger qualification, if it is classified as a public body or if it is subject to an insolvency procedure.

The Environment Agency usually enforce the scheme by serving warning notices and only resort to civil penalties in more serious cases.

Individual decisions regarding companies will be dealt with on a case by case basis, a spokesperson for the agency has revealed.
