Welsh Government to set up £70m energy efficiency fund

The Welsh Government has set aside a £70m fund designed to convince energy-efficiency companies to carry out improvement works in Wales rather than elsewhere, a news report in the local business media has revealed.

The administration has decided to allocate an impressive £35m to fight fuel poverty in 2014-15, with a further £35m to follow in 2015-16.

The funds will be used to encourage energy firms, which are already obliged to improve the energy performance of UK homes under the Energy Company Obligation, to make green home improvements in Wales rather than elsewhere.

Minister for natural resources and food Alun Davies said: “Not only will this ensure warmer homes and lower fuel bills in some of the less wealthy areas of Wales, it will also offer new and lucrative opportunities for Welsh business and ensure a healthy supply of high-quality job opportunities in communities across Wales.”
