Improving the energy efficiency of UK homes is key for attaining the UK climate targets

Improving the overall energy efficiency of the UK housing stock is the key to help reduce the UK’s carbon emissions, experts in the field have recently suggested.

Researchers from the Imperial College Centre for Energy Policy and Technology have recently released their Managing Heat System Decarbonisation report, which is aimed at the energy used in the UK to heat homes, which adds up to almost 25% of the country’s carbon emissions. Reducing these emissions would make it easier for the UK to meet its targets to be a low-carbon economy by 2050. The report covers a number of areas that will play a large part including energy efficiency and demand; national and local infrastructure; and governance.

The UK’s housing stock is one particular area of concern as many older buildings use significant amounts of energy just to keep them heated. With 90% of today’s homes still in use in 2050 the report found that there are 25 million existing homes that will need significant work over the next decades.

“Although 25 million homes seems to be an almost insurmountable target, we believe it can be done,” says Dr Keith MacLean, the lead author of the report, “We just need to start as soon as possible and have long term planning, strategies and investment in infrastructure.”

The HeatingSave Building Energy Management System – perfect for slashing energy bills and improving energy efficiency

The HeatingSave Building Energy Management System helps customers save more than 30% on their bills by optimizing any heating system’s overall functionality. This is done by taking into account a variety of factors, such as internal and external temperatures, occupancy, time of the year, the particular characteristics of installed boilers, etc. All of the data is used in order to determine the best heating patterns for the various heating zones within any building, using our proprietary heat-loss algorithm.

The end result is that users still get a very good level of comfort, while in the same time saving energy and money in the process.
