Millennials ‘don’t trust utilities with their data’, new research reveals

Almost half of millennials are not comfortable about sharing their data with energy suppliers, a recent survey suggests.

SAS polled 2,000 people across the UK aged between 16 and 34 and revealed around 35% of them believe utilities use their personal data for their own benefit and just 18% trust their energy provider to find the best deal available.

Furthermore, the survey found that only 8% said they actually help monitor the amount of gas and electricity they use at home and less than a half – 48% – of millennials surveyed would be happy to share their energy consumption with suppliers to help them manage power usage.

One way to circumvent this lack of trust and still enjoy the energy-saving benefits of a monitoring system would be to install a third-party system – such as the HeatingSave Building Energy Monitor.

HeatingSave Building Energy Monitor – monitor and take control of your energy use

The HeatingSave Building Energy Monitor is a wireless management system that collects information from sensors placed in a building. It is unobtrusive and causes minimal disruption during installation. The system collects internal and external temperature data, along with information on how the heating system works and details of energy use. It also monitors the way a building is used in terms of its occupancy and the occupants’ activities and lifestyles.

Using a password protected standard WiFi connection, sensors can quickly be set up to review and quantitatively analyse the data with user-friendly software graphics, via a laptop, PC, mobile phone or tablet-based device.

Building owners and managers can access their energy usage details online to help them manage energy use more efficiently. This information is presented using a dashboard system that provides consolidated and drill down views of the energy use data.
