Smart BMS sensors can help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning

The number of children suffering from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning has increased over the past year, a recent report has been able to suggest.

The research, by awareness campaign group Project SHOUT, shows that more than 500 cases involving under 18s were reported last year. It also suggests that poisoning by the odourless and colourless gas, dubbed the silent killer, causes about 50 deaths a year in the UK. The figures, obtained through a Freedom of Information request, show an alarming increase in the number of cases since 2015.

The worst-affected areas for children are London and the East Midlands (a 28% increase), the West Midlands (58%) and East Anglia (211%).

Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning using smart BMS sensors

Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced when fuel does not burn properly in gas and oil boilers, gas hobs and fires, log burners and open fires and barbecues.

The only way to detect it is with a specialist alarm, such as the HeatingSave T3506, a reliable and cost-effective Carbon Monoxide alarm/sensor that maybe used as a digital input to a HeatingSave building management system.

The sensor is set to trigger and produce a local audible alarm (85dB) when concentrations of carbon monoxide within the air reach or exceed 50ppm within 90 minutes / 100ppm within 40 minutes / 300ppm within 3 minutes.

Unobtrusive (100 x 100 x 46 mm) and easy to install, the sensor can inform users when carbon monoxide concentrations exceed the safe levels, and can even trigger a Single Room Heat Recovery Extractor Units, when such a device is installed.
