  1. New scheme hopes to cut energy costs for Staffordshire homes

    A new scheme that aims to help half the energy costs of over 130 residents in Staffordshire has recently been launched, a news report into the matter has revealed.

    Kensa Heat Pumps are working alongside Trent & Dove Housing to deliver the scheme. As part of this programme, conventional electrical heating systems will be replaced in one and two bedroom bungalows with a ground source heat pump and a new radiator based heating system.

    Connected to a network of communal ground arrays across 15 sites, the heat pumps will provide 100% of heating and domestic hot water requirements.

    Steve Grocock, Housing Director of Property Services for Trent & Dove Housing, suggests the scheme could save each property up to £350 per year.

    He added: “Over the past three years we have invested heavily in our ‘harder to heat’ properties and the addition of ground source heat pumps to some of our more rural homes should help our tenants, many of whom are elderly or vulnerable, make significant savings on their energy bills.”

  2. Huge investment is needed in energy efficiency, new report argues

    There’s a very real and significant need for more focus on conserving energy and reducing demand as part of efforts to tackle climate change emissions, rather than just making heat and power supplies cleaner, a report by Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has warned.

    The paper is based on research conducted for the organisation by Cambridge Architectural Research and Anglia Ruskin University, argues that, without significant investment in energy efficiency measures, the UK will be forced to hand over huge areas of the countryside to wind turbines, solar panels and fuel crops in order to meet greenhouse gas cutting targets.

    Campaigners have called for a much bolder national programme to reduce energy and carbon emissions from homes and community buildings, and for the implementation of stronger zero-carbon standards for new homes.

    Nick Clack, senior energy campaigner at the CPRE, said: “Our research intensifies calls for the new government to implement a much bolder national programme to reduce energy and carbon emissions from homes if we are to get anywhere near the 80% emissions cuts required under the Climate Change Act.

    “Unless there is effective government support for this work, we risk seeing large areas of the countryside lost to avoidable new energy infrastructure and even higher energy bills.”

  6. Close to 60% of companies affected by ESOS are not prepared for it, survey reveals

    Close to 60% of the companies who will be liable to take part in the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) have not started work on the required assessment, data from the third annual Energy Management report drawn up by edie.net has been able to reveal.

    The ESOS scheme is providing a significant opportunity for UK businesses to employ best practice techniques in their energy monitoring and consumption.

    Under ESOS provisions, companies will have to be fully compliant with the scheme’s requirements by December 2015, by in order to do so, they’d need at least one year’s worth of accurate energy consumption measurements.

    However, although 82% of qualifying businesses are aware of ESOS, just 39% have started work on securing a lead assessor.

    Those surveyed identified a number of barriers that continue to hinder their adoption of energy efficiency measures. 62% of respondents identified funding as the biggest barrier, while 32% said they had trouble selecting the right technology/programmes. In addition, two thirds of those surveyed said that they are looking at installing an energy-efficient lighting system in 2015.

  7. Big Six will earn £118 before tax from each household over the next year.

    The UK’s Big Six energy suppliers will earn £118 before tax from each household over the next year, an increase of £5 compared to last month’s estimate, figures published in OFGEM’s Supply Market Indicator have been able to reveal.

    The SMI is a 12-month forward look at cost trends in the domestic energy market. The latest indicators show that the average dual fuel bill for the next 12 months from March is £1,295. This is £6 lower than last month’s estimate and around £60 lower than our estimate a year ago.

    Ofgem estimates that the suppliers’ wholesale gas and electricity costs will be around £553 or 43 per cent of an average dual fuel bill, while network costs for the next 12 months will be £295 or approximately 23 per cent of the average dual fuel bill

    Furthermore, the cost of environmental and social obligations will be around £94 or approximately 7 per cent of the average dual fuel bill and suppliers’ operating costs are rated at around will be around £177.

  8. City of Edinburgh Council to spend £3.3 million on energy efficiency measures for local residents

  9. Simpler energy prices could help home owners save on heating bills, research finds

    The survey found 91% of people spotted the cheapest deal when shown simple prices compared to 43% who picked the correct choice under the current system.
