  1. 500 Peterborough residents joing money saving energy deal

    An energy saving scheme that has helped Peterborough residents save a combined total of £100,000 on their gas and electricity bills has just passed a major milestone as it signed up its 500th customer, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

    Peterborough Energy is a a local energy partnership formed by the city council and national supplier OVO Energy.

    The dual and single fuel (electricity only) energy tariffs are exclusive to residents with Peterborough local authority area postcodes and the fixed tariff is in the top five cheapest available according to the consumer advice publication Which?. Residents could save an average of £252 on their energy bills.

    A spokesperson for OVO Energy said: “We are very pleased with the take up of Peterborough Energy within the city, and to collectively save residents an average of £100,000 in just a matter of months is quite an achievement. We look forward to working with Peterborough City Council to continue building on these early successes for the energy partnership.”

  2. Energy supplier provides vouchers for fuel free top-ups

    One of the UK’s Big Six energy suppliers has helped more than 600 Gloucester residents affected by fuel poverty, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

    Energy firm npower has provided 220 vouchers for fuel free top-ups in Gloucester as part of a pilot programme. Every voucher has a £49 credit which people can use to top up their gas and electricity meters.

    The programme has enabled local households that run out of energy to get the power back within a few hours and keep the lights and heating on for up to two weeks.

    All households using pre-payment meters can benefit regardless of whether or not they are npower customers.

    The programme is a partnership with poverty charities the Trussell Trust and National Energy Action.

    A new organization designed to combat fuel poverty has been established in Scotland, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

    Since 39.1% of households in Scotland are in fuel poverty, according to the latest statistical released, the newly-established Scottish Rural Fuel Poverty Task Force will have its work cut out for it.

  4. Building more energy-efficient housing is blocked by lack of incentives

    The Government should provide more incentives for low-carbon technologies, such as residential heating equipment and cooling technologies, in order to drive their wide-scale adoption, a recent white paper published by the BSRIA, a specialist construction and building services organisation, argues.

    The report – Achieving Carbon Targets – suggests that the UK Government should introduce greater regulation on building energy consumption and introduce fines for non-compliance.

    BSRIA chief executive Julia Evans said: “Our industry will be aided through the establishment of clear policy, clear and uncomplicated legislation, and more regulation.”

    She added the Government could do more to incentivise upgrades in heating equipment to reduce emissions: “The majority of UK homes still have outdated heating control equipment. There is not only a lack of education amongst home owners; there is a lack of encouragement to upgrade their systems. A quick-win would be to incentivise residential thermostat replacement.”

  8. Bristol council flats to undergo major energy efficiency upgrade

    More than 1,700 high and low rise council flats across Bristol will undergo extensive energy efficiency upgrades as part of the city’s ‘Warmer Homes’ initiative, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

    The scheme is the second part of a three-stage programme spread out over nine years.

    It has set a target of improving 65 tower blocks in Bristol at an estimated cost of £69 million. Funding comes from a mixture of sources, including the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme.

    Steven Barrett, Bristol City Council’s Service Director for Housing Delivery, said: “The majority of council housing stock in Bristol was built between 1950 and 1970 so some flats are now in need of improvement.

  10. Energy efficiency measures drive UK energy consumption below 1965 levels
