  2. Government lambasted for scrapping ‘zero-carbon’ plans for future UK homes

    The Treasury’s plans to scrap ‘zero-carbon’ projects for future UK homes have been lambasted by green groups and house building organisations, who argue that future home owners will be ultimately left in debt and forced to pay more on their energy bills than they should.

    The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) Chief executive Julie Hirigoyen slammed the move, stating: “It is short-sighted, unnecessary, retrograde and damaging to the house building industry which has invested heavily in delivering energy efficient homes.

    “Britain needs more housing but there is no justification for building homes with a permanent legacy of high energy bills.”

    The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) welcomed the proposals for increased productivity, but cited concerns of a lack of sustainability skills and questioned the surprise abandonment of zero carbon homes.

    IEMA chief policy advisor Martin Baxter added: “The plan provides huge opportunities for mainstreaming sustainable thinking across the UK economy.

    “Moves to deliver three million apprenticeships and Institutes of Technology registered with professional bodies have the potential to significantly enhance the reach of sustainability skills needed to deliver UK businesses the growth opportunities inherent in a sustainable economy.”

  3. The UK should implement smart technologies for energy saving, experts argue

    The UK should focus more on implementing smart technologies for energy saving that can easily adapt to consumers’ needs, an expert in the field has recently argued.

    Peter Shearman, Local Government Innovation Manager at IT company Cisco, said: “IT is often seen as a driver of carbon because of the impact of data centres. Data centres are an extremely efficient way to do computing and they can enable nearly up to 5% of your energy consumption and they can enable energy reductions in the other 95%.”

    Mr Shearman added: “I think we are still in the early stage, if we focus on the public sector there is still a very long way to go. I think cities have structures in process in organisations and those have not been broken down by technology yet.”

  4. Federation of Master Builders (FMB) calls on the government to address energy efficiency of existing homes

    Following the recent Budget announced by the UK’s Chancellor, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has called on the Government to make existing homes a ‘national infrastructure investment priority’, a recent news report has been able to reveal.

    Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “The construction industry is at a loss as to why the Government is ignoring the need to improve our current housing stock.

    “By refusing to acknowledge the importance of these improvements, the Government is exacerbating problems such as high household fuel bills, carbon emissions and the national housing shortage.”

    Mr Berry stated that our existing homes account for 27% of current emissions, and that if the Government does not address this issue, the target will not be met.Mr Berry suggested by improving energy efficiency in homes, the Government will reduce fuel bills and ‘put more money back in the pocket of the consumer’.

    He said: “Making our existing homes a national infrastructure priority, re-directing carbon taxes, putting an energy efficiency financing framework in place and reducing VAT on housing renovation and repair work from 20% to 5% are all effective and implementable measures.

    “We urge the Government to wise up on energy efficiency – we want to work with Ministers to find a sustainable solution.”

  5. New public consultation launched into energy efficiency across the EU

    The European Union has launched a new public consultation on its Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, aiming at collecting public feedback on the set of rules aiming at improving the energy efficiency of buildings.

    Currently, buildings account for around 40% of the EU’s energy consumption with older buildings being much less energy-efficient. By improving energy efficiency, the EU could reduce its energy consumption by 5-6%, reports suggest.

    Under the 2010 Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, energy performance certificates must be included in all advertisements for the sale or rental of buildings, while EU countries must also establish inspection schemes for heating and air conditioning systems and all new buildings must be nearly zero-energy by the end of 2020.

    EU countries must also set minimum energy performance requirements for new buildings and renovations.

  6. Energy efficiency measures help US consumers and businesses save £500bn last year

    Implementing energy efficiency measures has helped the US save around $800 billion (£500bn) last year, a recent news report on this topic has been able to reveal.

    The report by American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) also pointed out that

  7. Energy literacy is becoming a problem for young people

    Young people have a lesser understanding of energy expenditure and bills and often wind up paying more according to Energy Saving Trust public opinion tracker UK:Pulse.

    Only seven per cent of under-35s say they fully understand their bill, with nearly 40 per cent unable to identify that electricity is measured in Kilowatt hours. By contrast, 18 per cent of over-55s say they fully understand their energy bill, while almost one in six older people (16 per cent) don’t know how energy is measured.

    Wind energy, one of the most iconic renewable energy sources, barely registered among the under-35s, a third of whom could not identify it as a renewable energy source, compared to just 15 per cent of those aged 55 or more.

    In total, 82 per cent of consumers said they were interested in saving energy even if it requires a change in daily routine, but in reality young people aren’t taking basic steps to save energy – older people are 20 per cent more likely than younger people to use only as much water as they need to make a cup of tea.

    The survey also showed that under-35s are twice as likely to own or be interested in owning smart heating controls to save money on heating, but nearly a third (30 per cent) of interested young people said they’d like to have one because it would be ‘fun to try’.

  8. Climate Change Committee asks for more investment in energy efficiency

    The Climate Change Committee (CCC) has recently insisted policy makers must adequately resource initiatives that make homes warmer and healthier and in turn reduce carbon emissions, a news source on this topic could reveal.

    Within their progress report of the 4th carbon budget, the CCC illustrates that spending on domestic energy efficiency for low income households is currently less than half the required investment to meet statutory targets.

  10. Up to 90 percent of small businesses are actively trying to become more energy efficient, study finds

    Almost nine in ten small businesses are actively trying to become more energy efficient, figures from a recent survey carried out by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has been able to find.

    Data from the research also suggests that, despite 78% of those surveyed citing cost saving as their reason behind their move to become greener, a staggering 70% claimed the move was driven by the desire to help the planet and that knowing they were supporting the environment was a huge motivator for implementing the changes.

    The study by the FSB found that 45% of businesses could not introduce new energy efficient practices as they didn’t own their business premise and were not authorised to make changes. 20% were also unaware of the extent of the changes that they could make and the greener options available to them.
