  1. Scotland commits £5m to tackle the problem of fuel poverty

    The Scottish government has allocated £5m to a scheme that would enable it to take a positive step towards ending fuel poverty, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

    The funding will be used as part of a cashback scheme that will be made available to housing associations, who can access it to install various energy saving measures in fuel poor homes to help them keep warm.

    The scheme is a part of the government £119 million target to improve fuel poverty and energy efficiency in 2015/16.

    Housing Minister Margaret Burgess said: “It is clear that energy efficiency measures can make a huge difference to families who are struggling to make ends meet. The cashback scheme is aimed at saving householder’s money by reducing their heating bills and will also cut carbon emissions.”

    The government states 24 social landlords across Scotland received funding to improve more than 1,600 properties across Scotland last year.

  2. New energy law could save the UK up to £12 billion per year on energy costs

    A new energy bills that focuses specifically on energy efficiency could help the UK save up to 12 billion pounds per year in energy costs, various organizations and groups have argued.

    The proposed ‘Cost Effective Energy Measures Bill’ aims to promote measures including energy efficiency, community energy and more efficient use and production of energy in and from buildings.

    It is supported by a variety of organizations, including the Sustainable Energy Association (SEA), the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE), National Energy Action (NEA) and Co-operative Energy.

    The organisations said if the bill becomes law “it would require the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change to draw up a ‘Cost Effective Energy Measures White Paper’, namely a national strategy to promote and accelerate the use of cost effective energy measures”.

    They claim the project, which is also backed by 60 MPs, would help the UK save money, ensure energy security, support the nation’s carbon reduction targets of 80% by 2050 and end fuel poverty.

    It would also create more than 100,000 jobs per year between 2020 and 2030, states the report.

  3. Ireland to invest €8.5m in energy efficiency

    The Church of Ireland has decided to provide €8.5 million (£6.12m) worth of funding for energy efficiency projects, a recent news report has been able to reveal.

    The cash will be used by the Ireland Energy Efficiency Fund (IEEF), which is aiming for investment totalling €70 million (£50.4m) by 2016.

    It was previously granted €35 million (£25.2m) by the Irish Government and funding from companies including Glen Dimplex and London & Regional Properties.

    David Hourihane, Managing Director of Sustainable Development Capital LLP, the IEEF’s investment advisor said: “Energy efficiency investments produce stable risk-adjusted returns whilst delivering value for money to the end client along with substantial environmental returns through funding infrastructure that reduces energy consumption.”

  4. Government urges Big Six energy suppliers to cut energy bills

    The UK’s Big Six energy suppliers are facing increased pressure from the Government to pass on the savings attained due to the fall in gas and electricity wholesale costs to their customers, rather than keeping them as profits for the shareholders, a news report can reveal.

    The Amber Rudd, the Energy and Climate Change Secretary, has written to the Big Six energy companies asking them to alter their prices after the latest analysis by regulator Ofgem found firms could increase their profit margins to up to £118 on an estimated annual dual fuel deal this year, while wholesale gas and electricity costs were £80 lower than they were estimated at a year ago.

    Furthermore, the Government argued that, since the pre-election pledge by Labour to impose a freeze on energy prices was no longer an issue of concern, the companies should act and slash their prices.

  5. Close to 90 percent of small businesses are interested in energy efficiency

    The majority of small business are interested in implementing energy efficiency measures and reducing their heating and electricity bills, recent research by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has found.

    78% of the 1,077 firms questioned listed savings on energy costs as a motivator for carrying out energy efficiency measures. Furthermore, 70% of small businesses said protecting the environment was an important motivator while a quarter highlighted improved energy efficiency as a way to attract customers and help promote their business.

    John Allan, FSB National Chairman said: “Small businesses are really enthusiastic about energy efficiency and this desire should be capitalised on for the good of their business and the environment.

    “However, what our research does tell us is a simple ‘one-size fits all’ approach will not work as different businesses are driven by a diverse range of factors.”

  6. Norfolk poultry company cuts energy bills

    A Norfolk poultry company has managed to cut its energy bills by switching from a gas boiler to a biomass one, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

    Traditional Norfolk Poultry (TNP) used gas heaters to keep chicks warm before swapping to biomass boilers at the end of 2014.

    The boilers at the brooding sites based near Attleborough burn wood pellets from sustainably sourced UK forests, enabling the company to make significant energy bill savings by emitting a much drier heat than gas.

    “There are lots of industries using biomass boilers but as far as poultry is concerned it’s not been hugely implemented,” said one of the company’s founding partners, Mark Gorton. “With gas, it’s fairly clean and easy delivery, so it’s still popular.”

  7. Cambridge University might use its £2.4billion endowment fund to invest in energy efficiency measures for its buildings

    Students, academics and staff from Positive Investment Cambridge (PIC) have been lobbying the university for four years to reconsider some of its investments, a news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

    The university has an estimated £2.4billion endowment fund to invest every year – the biggest in Europe. Now, the university’s council voted to set up a new working group to investigate greener, more socially responsible investments.

    Ellen Quigley from PIC said the move could “carry great weight” and praised the university for the “courageous step”.

  8. DECC publishes updated Energy Technology List

    The Department of Energy & Climate Change has just published its updated Energy Technology List, with HeatingSave again featured as a top supplier of Building Energy Management Systems.

    The ETL (or Energy Technology Product List, ETPL) is a government-managed list of energy-efficient plant and machinery, such as boilers, electric motors, and air conditioning and refrigeration systems that qualify for full tax relief. For a product to be on the ETL, it must meet specific energy-saving or energy-efficient criteria. It is part of the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) tax scheme for businesses.

    The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) annually reviews the technologies and products that qualify for inclusion. The ETL is managed on behalf of DECC by the Carbon Trust.

    Under the ECA scheme, a business can invest in energy-saving plant or machinery that might otherwise be too expensive.

    Research by price comparison website Confused found that the most common reason for people building their own home is to have the freedom to design it how they want with 79% giving this reason.

  10. Pupils in Lincolnshire school embark on energy saving programme

    Pupils at two schools in Lincolnshire have taken part in the County Council’s SCoRE energy efficiency programme, which trains several pupils in each school to become Lincolnshire Carbon Ambassadors, who are able to identify energy saving opportunities, and implement behaviour change campaigns in their school.

    The project focuses on low-cost, quick-win actions to reduce the electricity consumption of schools. It is expected that schools will reduce their electricity consumption by at least 10 per cent, although schools who embrace the SCoRE ethos, using a whole-school approach to raise awareness, have saved over 30 per cent as a result of the programme.

    Jess Smith, SCoRE programme co-ordinator says: “These schools have demonstrated that a whole-

    school, student-led approach to reducing energy consumption works very well. We’re really pleased with the creativity and innovation that the students have demonstrated during their behaviour change campaigns, raising awareness about why saving energy is so important and helping others to adopt new habits.”
