  1. Sussex households on oil-fired boilers spends less than urban households on gas mains

    Rural households in Sussex that rely on oil-fired boilers for heating and hot water are now spending significantly less than urban households connected to mains gas, according to new figures from the Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC).

    The price of heating an average three bedroom property with oil has reduced further over recent months and is now £142 per year cheaper than mains gas, according to OFTEC, the UK trade body for oil fired heating.

    The association has said rural homeowners across Sussex are benefiting from an average £500 fall in the price of heating oil over the last two years.

    The figures also show that oil is significantly cheaper than other fuels often used in rural properties – 42.5% (£691) less expensive than LPG and 42% (£670) less than electric storage heaters to heat the same average, three bedroom home.

  2. Community centre set to become more energy efficient

    A community centre in Nuneaton is set to become more energy efficient after securing a grant from The Veolia Environmental Trust, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

  3. Four million UK householders owe suppliers £507m, survey finds

    Despite recent cuts to tariffs and the roll out of multiple schemes and programmes designed to help people save on their energy bills, the number of households in debt to their energy company is estimated to have grown by 260,000 since last year, with close to four million UK householders collectively owing suppliers £507 million right now.

    The average debt per household is £130, up from £128 last year, a uSwitch poll suggests. The survey found 30 per cent of consumers are choosing to “turn a blind eye” to rising debt in the hope it will decrease over time, while just 19 per cent said they were able to pay it off in one lump sum.USwitch director of consumer policy Ann Robinson said: “This is evidence that energy has become totally unaffordable for millions of homes.

    “Not only are more households in the red to their energy supplier, but the amount they owe has gone up, despite the recent price cuts. Energy suppliers must urgently pass on double-digit reductions to their customers – many of whom have admitted to going cold this winter in an attempt to keep their bills down.”

  4. Airport set to embark on energy saving drive

    One of the largest airports in Northern Ireland is set to embark on an energy economy drive designed to lop £100,000 off its electricity, gas and oil bills, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

    Belfast International Airport used 20.72 million kWh last year at a cost of over £1.6 million, with electricity accounting for the largest share of the cost, £1.2 million.

    “More than that, we intend to set up an Energy Team and develop departmental energy reports. Crucially, we are looking for energy-saving ideas that will make a difference. So, if staff have a ‘eureka moment’, they will find a willing audience in the Energy Team.”

  5. Irish Government to invest £13.4m in energy efficiency projects

    The Irish Government has revealed plans to invest £13.4m (€18.6 million) in various energy efficiency projects set to be implemented across the country, a recent media news report on this matter has been able to reveal.

    The NHS is currently wasting money on energy and could attain major savings of “several hundred million pounds” by comparing energy costs, a recent report into the NHS has been able to find.

    The report also found the £50 million NHS Estates Efficiency Fund is on track to deliver savings of 100.6 Mkg of carbon dioxide per year, while future savings under this project will add up to £69.8 million in the first five years of operation.

  7. Multiple flats in London to become energy efficient courtesy of EDF

    Around 37 blocks of flats in the Borough of Barking & Dagenham are set to become more energy efficient courtesy of EDF Energy, who is investing more than £500,000 as part of the Government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO).

    The energy supplier is partnering with contractor Avalon and the the project is expected to cut around 18,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and bring “significant” savings on consumers’ fuel bills every year.

    Eric Salomon, Energy Field Services Director at EDF Energy said: “This project will make a significant difference to the lives of local residents, who will benefit from lower fuel bills and much warmer homes. We are proud that we are able fund improvements for Avalon’s installation team to help people living in cold and hard to treat flats.”
